Karen’s Killer Fixin’s: CHEDDAR CHEESE BUNS, #Recipe from Karen’s Kitchen

It’s time for Karen’s Killer Fixin’s! Over the years, I’ve filled two 4-inch, 3-ring binders with my own creations as well as recipes my family and friends were willing to share with me. I simply love to cook and want to share that love with my readers. So every Friday, I share one recipe I think you and your family might enjoy. It might be a main course recipe from my own kitchen or a guest author favorite. It could be a cookie or baked item. Candy. Salads. Whatever strikes the eye and fancy…which today is CHEDDAR CHEESE BUNS!

After reading on Facebook about someone not being able to find bread during this COVID-19 outbreak, it occurred to me that we might need to find our own alternatives to store-bought bread. I LOVE this recipe. It’s simple and easy to make and immensely satisfying, especially if you’re a cheese aficionado like me.

I hope you enjoy today’s Killer Fixin’s. Happy eating!

CHEDDAR CHEESE BUNS
[Makes 2 dozen]

1 T. yeast
½ cup sugar
¼ cup warm water
1 beaten egg
2 cups scalded milk
5-6 cups flour
¼ cup butter
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
1 tsp. salt
melted butter

Combine water and yeast, let foam.  Pour scalded milk into bowl.  Add sugar, butter and salt. Cool to lukewarm.  Add egg and yeast mixture.  Add 2 cups flour and mix well, gradually stirring in remaining flour to make soft dough.  Add cheese with last cups.  Turn out on floured board and knead until satiny.  Put in buttered bowl, brush with butter.  Cover, let rise until double.  Punch down.  Let rest.  Roll out dough.  Cut rounds with biscuit cutter and place on buttered cookie sheets and let rise until doubled.  Bake at 375*, 20-25 minutes.

Variation: Add 1 T. chives or fine-chop 2 green onions.
Note: Recipe can be halved easily.

    1. It occurs to me that a lot of people may need to start making their staples if products aren’t readily available on the shelves. Good luck if you start making yours again, Kathleen!

  1. Now all I have to do is remember to buy yeast when I’m traipsing around stores in my gloves and mask! Thanks for sharing, this sounds like wonderful comfort food.
