The UnMatchables Case 1
BY TERESA LaBELLA
Blurb
A slam dunk case pivots deadly.
Private investigators Eddie Emerson and Kelly Gillespie specialize in deep dive background checks for clients wary of an intimate partner who seems too good to be true. Jacob Malone has fallen in love with the lovely first chair cellist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Cherise Blanchet’s guidance and friendship helped Jacob’s son master the cello and cope with his parents’ bitter divorce. Jacob hires the PI partners to dig into Cherise’s past.
Gossip leads to intrigue and an international high society celebrity with more than his reputation to protect. Clues and cover-ups connect petty crimes, unsolved sexual assaults and mysterious threats linked to an assassin with a secret vendetta.
The UnMatchables first deep dive case could be their last!
Excerpt
Eddie surveyed the bruise under his chin in his mirrored reflection.
That’s when he heard Kelly scream.
Eddie ran barefoot down the hall toward the opposite end of the penthouse, circled through the kitchen, and grabbed the longest blade from its notched nest in the nearest drawer. Whatever the threat, Eddie wouldn’t go down again without a fight.
Kelly stood in front of the hallway’s open linen closet, one hand over her mouth, the other clutching the front of a borrowed white t-shirt from Eddie’s drawer. A pile of towels lay in semi-folded disarray around her bare feet.
“Kelly? What the …” Eddie inspected the sheets and towels on the shelf.
That’s when he saw it.
Red ink stained white linen, an exclamation point on the ruin of a flat sheet sliced beyond repair.
“Final Warning,” the message read.

CHEF JOHN’S RECIPE FOR KELLY’S CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
NOTE FROM TERESA: As Danger Noted opens, confessed alcoholic Eddie is at a dive bar in the south side of Chicago staring down a shot of whiskey. Fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies are Kelly’s lure to get him out of the bar, save his sobriety and bring him to her. My late husband would bake his indescribably delicious chocolate chip cookies on those Sunday afternoons that I dedicated to writing my novels. His recipe was included in the cookbook of compiled Recipes from New Life in Love as featured in my contemporary romance series. Here is Chef John’s recipe for Kelly’s Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Ingredients
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee, slightly crushed
12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
Cream the butter with the sugars until fluffy.
Beat the egg and the vanilla extract.
Combine the dry ingredients and beat into the butter mixture.
Stir in the chocolate chips.
Drop by large spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes, or 10 to 12 minutes for a crispier cookie
Special Giveaway: Teresa will give away an ebook copy of DANGER NOTED to the first two lucky readers who answer the following question on her Karen’s Killer Fixin’s blog.
Question: What 1980s television series inspired my muse for The UnMatchables? Here’s a clue: The characters of Kelly and Eddie were Maddie Hayes and David Addison on TV.
Happy Reading!
